Gerber files are the standard open format describing each PCB layer — copper, solder mask, silkscreen, drill data — used by fabricators to build the board.
A Gerber X2 package — or one of the intelligent alternatives, IPC-2581 or ODB++ — is the deliverable that turns a PCB design into a physical board. Complete, correct fabrication data is essential for a smooth first-pass build.
