What is functional safety?
Functional safety is the part of a system's safety that depends on electronics and software working correctly, managed through standards like IEC 61508.
It uses hazard analysis, safety integrity levels, and rigorous verification so that a failure does not lead to unacceptable risk. It is the expected state of the art for safety-related automotive (ISO 26262) and industrial (IEC 61508/IEC 61511) systems; medical devices address the same goal through ISO 14971, IEC 60601-1 and IEC 62304.
